1/2-Day Halibut Cove Kayak Tour

Halibut Cove is a breathtaking corner of Alaska where mile-high snow-capped peaks thrust themselves out of the protected cove. This trip starts with a 30-minute scenic boat cruise on Kachemak Bay, arriving at our wilderness lodge outpost inside Kachemak Bay State Park. After instructions and “gearing up”, head out on the protected cove in search of sea otters, bald eagles, and other marine life. Paddle along sea cliff, sea caves, and then stretch your legs and do some beach combing on a pristine beach accessible only by boat. The journey continues as you hear the stories of the once bustling fishing village of Halibut Cove, turned ghost town, then revived into an eclectic community of a few dozen hardy fishermen, artists, and oyster farmers.  In short, there’s no place on earth like Halibut Cove!

Difficulty

Casual to moderate: 2-3 hours paddling with some beach walking.  You dress in layers, we provide all technical gear.

Morning departure, trip times vary.  Overall tour is 4-5 hours with 2-3 hours paddling.

3/4-Day Halibut Cove Hike & Kayak

3/4-Day Hike & Kayak Combo

Enjoy a 3-4 hour kayaking and walking tour of beautiful Halibut Cove near Homer, Alaska.  Paddle along sea cliffs and sea caves watching for endearing sea otters and nesting bald eagles. The journey then continues by foot into Alaska’s first state park. A scenic 1.5 mile hike takes you through several distinct ecosystems into a spectacular glacier-carved valley.  Guests are awed by inspiring views of Grewingk Glacier terminating in the picturesque lake. The mile-high mountains, snow-capped peaks, blue glacier ice, and floating icebergs make for an unforgettable experience.

Difficulty

Casual to moderate: 2 hours paddling, and 2-3 hours walking. The 1.5 mile State-Park-maintained trail to Glacier Lake has elevation gains of 350 feet.  The trail has many roots and rocks; sturdy footwear is recommended.

Full-Day Glacier Lake Kayaking & Hiking

This 7-8 hour tour is perfect for those that enjoy active, outdoor experiences. The tour starts in Homer, Alaska with a scenic 30-minute boat cruise to Kachemak Bay State Park, accessible only by boat. Enjoy a picturesque hike through 3 distinct ecosystems; the marine environment, coastal forest, and glacial moraine. This Homer, Alaska glacier lake hike is informative as well; your guide shares the history, the wildlife, and geology of this unique area.  In the glacier valley, guests are awed by the views of the immense glacier dropping into the lake. We continue our journey by kayak with sounds of moving ice filling the valley as we paddle our stable kayaks past icebergs of all sizes.  Enjoy a lunch stop in full full view of the mile-wide glacier face. Lucky guests may see the glacier “calve” icebergs into the lake. Glacial terrain is uneven and rocky; good footing and sturdy shoes are a must. Paddling on the lake is easy to moderate; beginners are welcome. A moderate level of fitness and agility is recommended to get the best out of this popular trip. Includes 3 hours hiking and 2-3 hours kayaking throughout the day.
